Understanding tests
Understanding your lab results

A lab report can be difficult to interpret on its own. Understanding how results fit into your care can help you prepare questions for the clinician who ordered the test.
Read the result in context
Your clinician considers test results alongside your symptoms, medical history, and examination. A flagged value does not automatically mean illness, and a result inside the reference range does not rule out every problem.
Use the range on your report
Laboratories may use different methods, units, and reference ranges. A number found online may not be an appropriate comparison for your result.
Ask about the next step
Useful questions include: What does this result mean for me? Is follow-up needed? Should the test be repeated? Discuss the report with the clinician who ordered it rather than interpreting a number on its own.
